Martyn (Mike) Smith

Former club member Martyn (Mike) Smith has sadly passed away aged 86 after a short illness.

Mike as he was always known to us started his love for cycling in the early 50’s when he joined the South Eastern road club. At that time he was riding at Herne Hill track and would often record tales of competing  against the legends of the track of that era.

Work brought him to Market Harborough in the sixties when he soon joined up with the then struggling Welland Valley Wheelers.

The Wheelers being a mainly time trial club and there not being a local track, Mike started doing distance rides. His claim to fame was riding the north road 24 hour on two occasions and claiming the club record.

Mike’s other great interest was being a swimming coach at Harborough Baths, teaching many people to swim.

When Mike finally retired from competing his love for cycling carried on always willing to give a hand and he still took an interest in what club  members were doing.

Our thoughts are with Audrey and family at this sad time.

Mike’s funeral is on Friday October 18 at 9.15 at the Baptist church Market Harborough.
