Boxing Day Time Trial

Amid the recent icy grip of winter, the relatively balmy weather over Christmas feels like a distant memory. Perhaps that fleeting warmth played a part in the fantastic turnout for the Boxing Day 10-mile time trial? Or maybe it was the irresistible lure of Angela’s home-made mince pies and sausage rolls? Then again, it might simply have been cabin fever pushing cyclists out of their homes and back onto their bikes. Whatever the motivation, it was a thoroughly enjoyable and wonderfully sociable event.

We were pleased to welcome a mix of riders: club regulars, visitors with family links to the club, and local cyclists looking for a festive challenge. The variety was delightful. Some riders fully embraced the holiday spirit in fancy dress (a bold choice for aerodynamics), others took on the challenge tandem-style, and at least two braved their very first time trial. Meanwhile, a good few riders were genuinely blistering fast. Personally, I was left in awe—and a touch humbled—by the cyclist who whizzed past me despite starting a full 16 minutes later. That’s as much a testament to my leisurely pace as it is to their remarkable speed!

Big cheers to the marshals and timekeepers who kept spirits high and the event running smoothly. A special shout-out also goes to the “mini crowd” of supporters in Slawston and Cranoe, whose encouragement gave everyone a boost. Your cheers were a highlight—any chance you could make this a regular thing?

As for the accolades: the family tandem duo of John and James Abbot turned heads with their seamless coordination, all the more impressive considering their short time riding together. Jason Williams earned the unofficial “Best Dressed” award, pedalling in a Christmas onesie that absorbed water like a sponge, surely adding a few extra pounds by the end.

On the speed front, Hudson Henry delivered an impressive performance, clocking in at a very speedy time of   22 minutes and 8 seconds to claim the title of fastest rider. Richard Kendrick took the honour of fastest WVCC rider with a superb 24 minutes and 17 seconds—if I’m not mistaken, achieved on a standard road bike. Meanwhile, the talented Ruby Isaac shone as the fastest (and youngest) female rider.

Congratulations to everyone who participated, whether it was your first time or your fiftieth. And to the organisers and helpers – your hard work and dedication are deeply appreciated. Here’s to more events filled with camaraderie, cake, and a bit of healthy competition.

Oh,  and thank you to Richard Hardwicke for the fantastic photos.
