Mighty Mudlarks Mix it at Marvellous Marston

On Sunday Welland Valley had the honour of kicking off this year’s Leicestershire Cyclocross League at Marston Lodge. Kevin Mills and his merry Mudlarks designed a new course in the forest combining gravel, tough climbs, steep run-ups, grassy woodland tracks and, a rarity in local leagues, a technical descent to test the riders.
There were some great yellow performances, notably Jamie Kershaw who came first in the U16 boys in spite of jamming his chain a couple of times and Ellie Humphries who’s blistering first lap and fearless descending saw her out of sight of the rest of the field, winning the women’s senior category by nearly 3 minutes. Many thanks to Kevin Mills for organising and everyone who helped with course prep and setting on the previous two Saturdays, all volunteers on the day and everyone who helped dismantling the course afterwards. A lot of work goes into running a cyclocross event and it couldn’t have been achieved without the support of club members and friends. Thanks also to the commissaire team, LCXL league officials and volunteers, the timing and first aid teams, Taste Outside Catering and Chris Thresh for the use of a spectacular venue.

Battle resumes at Weldon on Sunday, followed by Western park on 15 October and the next WVCC home fixture at Misterton on 22 October.
