Ellie joined the WVCC Committee recently, and has put pen to paper to explain a little about her involvement in our amazing sport.
I have always enjoyed sport and cycling. I only really got more serious about cycling when I met my partner Chris who was training for Race Across the West at the time and persuaded me to ditch the hybrid and get a road bike. I brought a second-hand Cube which unbeknown to me was way too big but I thought it was perfect. I then started competing in local time trails for fun and found that my times were improving week-by-week. I was then talked into buying a carbon bike which I resisted for a long time thinking I didn’t justify one and not believing it would make much difference until one day a friend found me the perfect bike and so I bit the bullet and we drove half way around the country to pick it up…this was an absolute game changer for me, also helped by the fact that it actually fitted me! I started cycling further and more frequently. Then in 2021 after much deliberation we chose to join Welland Valley and the rest is history.
Since joining Welland Valley I have been supported and encouraged by the club to do various things that I said I would never do including road racing. I took part in my first closed circuit race at Bruntingthorpe in 2021 which is where I rediscovered my competitive side and how much I had missed competing. I have since completed my first cyclo-cross season which is where my real passion lies and then rode my first road race in March this year.
I am really pleased to be joining the WVCC Committee. I feel very passionately about the club and its members, more so from my own experience and all that I have gained from joining the club and the friends I have met in such a short amount of time. I am hoping that I can bring, if nothing else, a friendly, approachable face that is always happy to help!
