The Fabulous 5 #5: From 20st man-mountain to have-a-go racing snake

Stuart Haycox, Webmaster

I’ve no idea how or why I got into cycling but I do remember ~5yrs ago as a 20st man-mountain I purchased a £150 Boardman (still my favourite bike!) and to the amusement of my wife set off for my first 2km ride looking more like an eccentric Boris Johnston than a cyclist and no knowing how to change gears. As they say the rest is history… each week I rode a little further, lost a little more weight and eventually found myself riding LEJOG.

Having moved to Harborough just before the pandemic (and some gentle encouragement from Nick Clarke who worked in the same office) I joined my first WVCC Club Run shortly after lockdown 1.0. To my surprise not only have I really enjoyed being part of such an active, friendly and encouraging club but I’ve really enjoyed trying some new disciplines such as time trialling, Bruntingthorpe Races and latterly CX at Misterton – thank you for making me feel very welcome!
