It was back to a little bit of normality on Friday night with the return for some much needed off road racing. Promoted by Rugby Velo, the Summer CX event was laid out around a fast (and very bumpy) course winding around several fields and a twisty, forested section.
There was a fantastic turnout of Welland Valley riders in all categories, Michael Burke in the Senior event, Nicola Traynor in the Ladies, myself, Simon ASkham, Simon Dixey, Nick Horder in the V40’s and Charlie Simpson in the V50’s.
I chose to use my MTB for the race instead of a cross bike as the course was somewhat rough in places. The race started fast and remained that way for all 55 minutes. I managed to somehow be in 3rd place after the 1st lap with Simon Askham close by, this is how it remained for much of the race with the 2 of us exchanging places each lap. After 6 laps, my race legs decided to leave me and I slowly dropped back to eventually finish in 5th place V40 and 10th overall.
Final results were:
Simon Askham 3rd V40, 8th Overall
Nick Horder 9th V40, 19th overall
Simon Dixey 11th V40, 22nd overall
Charlie Simpson 15th V50, 51st Overall
Michael Burke 5th Senior, 12th overall
Nicola Traynor 5th V40, 8th overall Ladies
Best bit of the night? Having the stinging leg feeling from racing and reliving your epic race to each of your fellow club mates at the end! Fingers crossed for more of the same this year.
