Thirty-four gluttons for punishment turned out for the 5+5 time trial in the Langtons on Tuesday evening.

For those unfamiliar with this cruel concept; riders are required to ride eyeballs out for five miles from Tur Langton to Hallaton – stop for c15 minutes to get the heart rate down below 250 bpm – and then ride back in the opposite direction.

Just to add to the excitement, both finish lines are at the top of short sharp hills.   It’s actually great fun (in a peculiar way), and will, hopefully, become a permanent fixture in the TT calendar.

And so to the results.

Fresh from his recent road race triumphs in the NCRA series, James Moore was fastest on the night – clocking 20.26 for his two runs.   His return leg from Hallaton to Tur Langton (with a useful cross tailwind for the riders). was an impressive 9.58; which, the mathematicians among you will have worked out, is a tad over 30mph average.

Second quickest was Hans Van Nierop in 20.43, followed by Maciej Suchocki in 21.23.

In the road bike category, Jason Williams clocked 22.21, with juvenile Aubrey Elmer at 22.26 and junior Ruby Isaac at 22.32.

Rounding out the top three placings in the female section were Milly Pinnock 24.13 and Mea Moore 25.11.

Sadly, two riders failed to finish due to mechanicals.

A special mention for the bike handling skills of Roger Kockelbergh, who snapped his chain standing on the climb up to Hallaton. Remarkably, he stayed on the bike and didn’t land on the top tube – thus keeping his place in the bass section of the club choir, rather than moving up to soprano.

Also a mention for Andy Poulton, who managed to get up both climbs using a 1x 69 front chainring. Chapeau.
