Racers Scheme
Welland Valley CC is today announcing an exciting new initiative to support racers in the club.
Subsidised coaching and bursaries for entry fees are being introduced to encourage more members to pin on a race number.
Announcing the news, club chair Judith Rout said:
“Welland Valley is a large club encompassing a broad range of cyclists. This is something that we celebrate as we seek to encourage more people to cycle more.
One part of our offering is cycle racing – be it road, cyclocross, MTB or time trials. At present, we are seeking to increase the number of our members that take part in these events. Whilst we fully appreciate that racing is not for everyone, at the same time know that we have responsibility to the sport and to the riders who do wish to compete. Our aim is to develop the sport we love and to encourage those who have the potential to do well within it.
We hope that our WhatsApp groups for racers will offer a level of community support and encouragement to all those who race. Once you are part of the WVCC WhatsApp community group, you can readily join these groups if desired.
On top of this we are introducing the Welland Valley Racing Scheme to offer further support. It is open to all first claim club members over the age of 16 who are in at least their second year of membership. It is designed to offer a degree of financial support for those who would benefit the most from it. Younger riders and women are particularly welcome to participate.
Section One: coaching
WVCC is lucky to have a number of British Cycling qualified coaches amongst its membership. We are able to offer up to five scheme members the opportunity to work with a club coach for a year at a subsidised price. The cost to the rider is likely to be around £13 per month with a further £13 paid by the club.
Section Two: financial support
We are inviting applications for up to five racing bursaries. These will have a value of up to £100 per year to help with the cost of race entry. Those who successfully apply for the bursary may claim half the cost of race entry fees. For example, if a race entry cost £30, the rider would be able to claim £15 from the club under the bursary arrangement. The application procedure will be simple to complete and designed to particularly encourage those newer to racing,” she said.
Commitment expected from scheme members
- Remain a first claim member of the club
- Ride in club kit
- Write one racing report per year suitable for posting on the club website and social media
