Mallory Finale

Four groups of riders battled for honours at the fourth and final handicap race this year at Mallory. Again it wasn’t the warmest of evenings but the riders soon warmed up and it was great to see some new members throwing themselves into the mix.

The 1st group of riders worked together and held on to the front of the race for a significant length of time but were caught by a larger and well organised second group  who were then swiftly caught by the 3rd group. A good  number of 2nd group cyclists hung on and stayed with this fast group heading the race and the peloton was impressive each time it came past the race officials, calling out instructions to each other and generally looking like a well oiled machine.

However the 4th group were equally determined and it was clear that with each lap they were gaining ground even though there weren’t many of them. Race officials started timing laps but, on the penultimate lap, concluded that the 4th group wouldn’t make it to the front. However, the fast guys obviously did not know this and they weren’t giving up! They stormed around the final lap causing much excitement amongst the spectators. In the end they didn’t quite make it, but we loved watching them try and come so close.

Congratulations to all who took part and thanks to all who ran and organised. My personal thanks to those who helped me count laps – I think I might have got the lap board right this week.
