What is a “2-up”?
A 2 up is a team time trial in which two riders seek to maximise their joint performance by sharing the work. Ideally riders should be fairly evenly matched. Unlike in an individual time trial where the aim is to ride at your endurance threshold for a specific distance, in a 2 up a pair will attempt to boost overall speed by using an overreach/recovery pattern ie. the rider at the front does a turn in which they are riding slightly above usual TT pace and then signals by flicking their elbow that they now need to recover for a period while the rider behind overtakes to do their turn.
The time for the pair is recorded as the second rider crosses the line, so it is vital that a pair stays together. This may lead to amendments on agreed strategies and in-race adaptation of pace to accomodate different abilities on hills etc.
Sheltering/drafting and overtaking safely require confidence resulting from practice so we advise that you and your partner do find time to try working on this together before the event.
Further information about 2 up strategies can be found here
NB 2 up entries “on the day” will not be accepted.
