A Summer of Cycling Awaits
Summer is just around the corner and club treasurer has promised me that it’s not going to rain for a month. So you’ll be wanting to get out on your bike as much as possible and the club certainly has a lot going on to help you do just that
Here’s a brief rundown of the events (in no particular order) we organise which I hope will be particularly useful to those new to the club. There are WhatsApp groups for most of these activities so just get in touch (chair@wellandvalleycc.co.uk) if you’d like to be added to a group.
Off Road: There are regular rides on Friday evenings and on Saturdays that cater for “regular” and “steadier” riders and don’t forget there are a couple of off-road routes included in the sportive. There are also the Friday Night Summer Specials for mountain bikers and, once we get to winter, there is plenty of cyclocross racing to enjoy.Â
Club Rides: There’s a no-drop social ride on Friday mornings that, over the summer months, includes a cafe stop. All riders welcome. On Sunday mornings the club run riders usually split into groups depending on speed and all meet up for coffee at the end of the ride.
Training: If hill climbing is your thing then do join the group that enjoys hill repeats on a weekday evening. There is also the chain gang on Thursday evenings which, depending on numbers, runs different groups according to speed. Early in the year, there are training rides on Saturday mornings and when it gets cold and dark in the evenings we’ve got Mudlarks training on Wednesday evenings.
Youngsters: Whizz Kids meet on the 2nd and 4th Saturday afternoons of each month and over the summer we run Youth Skills Sessions on the 2nd Monday of each month.

Racing: the club organises some great races locally which a good number of members participate in. We have our very own handicap race nights running at Mallory Park during July and August this summer. If they are half as good a last year, they will be hugely enjoyable.
Timetrials: the club championship is well underway with 10 mile timetrials running every other Tuesday evening over the summer months and other timetrials taking place on every other Sunday morning. It’s very encouraging to see so many members taking part – even with the shocking weather! Full details here: 2024 Club Championship – Welland Valley Cycling Club (wellandvalleycc.co.uk)
Sportive: the club’s own sportive is coming up on Sat May 18th – don’t miss out! There are 60km and 100km road and off-road routes, a great food stop and a beer for all those who complete. More details here: Sportive – Welland Valley Cycling Club (wellandvalleycc.co.uk)
