Mallory Summer Series – Race1 Report

Almost 50 riders – separated in age by almost 60 years – took to the start line for the first of the club’s four Summer Race Nights at Mallory, writes Chris Dainty.

Awaiting the peloton was a superb 1.2 mile ribbon of pothole-free tarmac; featuring a cheeky hill at the start / finish line, a hairpin bend and what should have been a ‘recovery descent’ but was actually a downhill grind into a strong headwind.

Riders set off in four groups at intervals – with a gap of 13 minutes between the slowest and the quickest. (And yes, these timings are being reviewed post-race).
Chain gangs of assorted shapes and sizes were quickly formed and the race was on. Particularly impressive performances were put in by the encouraging number of juniors in the pack, who toughed it out in the challenging conditions (but weren’t much help when you were sat behind them into the wind. Please fatten them up, parents).

After a lung-busting 16 laps, a sprint for the line saw Chris Orfeur pip James Moore for victory.Making up the rest of the top 10 were

  • Thomas Medley
  • Hans Van Nierop,
  • David Robertson
  • Jamie Kershaw
  • Tayyib Farook
  • Gary Roberts
  • Dan Main.

Huge thanks to Phil Rayner, George Barnett and the band of volunteers for working out ‘who was on what lap’ and making the evening a success. Thanks to Chris Elmer https://www.facebook.com/groups/1663924103935315/posts/3568380823489624  for all the photos.
