TT Results Catch Up

A number of reports here to enjoy so sit back and enjoy and thanks to all who contributed.

First Doug Tincello reports on open 10s at Lamport and Spalding

Lamport 10 TT 17th June: I took myself off to the Lamport course for round 6 of the Northampton and District CA series. I’d only done this course once before, as a 2up last September. Considering my decent form this year, I set myself a target of around 26 mins, thinking that was achievable compared to last year’s time. Turns out, I had again underestimated the difficulty of the course. It is an out and back; has three kickers right out of the gate, a long drag followed by a descent to the roundabout and then a longer and evilly tiered drag back, before dropping back down and having your legs shredded by the three kickers on the way back.

My start was not helped by the pusher offer turning into a dropper: unceremoniously dumping me in the road 30 sec before my start time. Flustered and more than a little *@$%@* annoyed I went off too hard, blew up on the return leg and was overtaken by Richard Latimer just before the finish on a road bike (Chapeau to him). 26’43” and I was disappointed until I checked the Strava times and realised I was about the same relative speed compared to Jon Durnin as usual, so that was all ok in the end. It’s a tough one.

Winner was David Mead (Lutterworth Cycle Centre) with a tarmac melting 20’35”

Spalding 10 TT 25th June:  So, in pursuit of one of my year’s targets (sub 24” 10 mile TT) I signed up for the Spalding 10. The course was as flat as a pancake: good shout for a fast time I thought….  Forgot that Spalding is in Lincolnshire and it’s always windy in Lincolnshire. The day was bright…and windy.  The course was flat…and horribly exposed. Most was on a barrier road, up on an embankment above the flood plain. No trees, no houses. No shelter. Did I say it was windy?

Out and back. The first half was quick…really quick.  The second less so. 41kph out; 36 coming back. Finished in 24’45”, which I guess was ok in the conditions. The host club were charming. Winner was Toby Bush (junior, Team Bottrill) in 20’52”. Note to self: do it again when it’s flat calm.

Meanwhile, on his way home from his Peterborough office Austin Smith stopped by to participate in the Peterborough Cycling Club TT10 at Helpston on 20th June. Armed with his training bike and a blustery wind,  Austin clocked a 26m 39s, a disappointing ride by his standards, but came away with a 6th (https://www.peterboroughcyclingclub.co.uk/road-bike-league-10-20-06-23/)

Jonathan Durnin went under the two hour mark for a 50 mile TT for the first time, clocking 1:56:34 at Cambridge CC’s ‘Viking 50’ on the F2/50 course at Cambourne on 24th June, with Jen Clegg (riding for Team Botteril) stopping the clock at 2:10:35 and Simon Ward 2:18:56 having after suffering a difficult last 10 miles.  Full results at https://www.cyclingtimetrials.org.uk/race-results/25156.

There was a strong WVCC turnout for the ‘David Grundy Memorial TT’ on 1 July, organised by our friends Ratae RC on the Gilmorton course.  It was a windy day, but this did not stop Jamie and Nik Kershaw, and Sophie and Debbie Ward all setting course PBs.

Jonathan Durnin stopped the clock at 24:05, good enough for second overall, with Jamie (25:17) fastest junior, and Linda Hubbard (27:10) fastest woman.  Nik Kershaw (24:31, 5th), Simon Ward (27:14, 11th), Steve Coulam (28:14, 17th), Debbie Ward (32:08, 24th) and Sophie Ward (33:29, 26th).   Full results at https://www.rataerc.org.uk/results

Well done to all.
