Cyclists and Horses

No one was hurt and it all turned out fine but it it could easily have been different. A horse was startled by a group of cyclists on Saturday morning, perhaps as they were trying to watch the NCRA race. Lycra isn’t much defence against horses hooves.

Almost all cyclists follow the highway code scrupulously; like horse riders, we’re very  aware of our vulnerability. Just as we want motorists to show consideration to cyclists, so we too show consideration to those on horseback.

So forgive the reminder but here’s a quick summary of the highway code that relates to cyclists and horses

Always make sure that horse riders (and pedestrians)  know you are there by ringing your bell or calling out politely, particularly if you are approaching from behind. Remember horses can be startled if passed without warning. Always be prepared to slow down or stop. Don’t pass a horse on their left.
