Hectic Off-Road Weekend – Cyclocross

There was lots of yellow action on the first weekend of the cyclocross season with the Notts & Derby League kicking off on Saturday and both the West Mids and Central Cyclocross Leagues starting on Sunday.

In Round 1 of the NDXCL at Shipley Simon Askham was 6th in the Vets.

Nik Kershaw reports from the West Mids League

Myself and Jamie ventured down to Ullenhall for the 1st round of the WMCCL. Jamie was up first in the U14 race where he set the pace for the first lap but over the next 5 laps he dropped off a little bit which he said was due to the heat and he started to suffer. He thoroughly enjoyed it and ended up 8th. Next up was myself in my first Vets 50 race. The pace again was quick from the word go and to my surprise I could see that I was in the top 10 for the first few laps. After 40 minutes of racing I ended up 14th o/a and 9th Vet 50 – 54 on a course that at times was smoother than Bruntingthorpe.

Meanwhile at Silverstone in the Central League

  • Vic Barnett 6th 60+ Vet
  • Dom Switzer 2nd Junior, Huw Wilson 7th
  • Hans van Nierop 13th 40+ Vet, David Wilson 68th after dropping his chain twice.
  • Michael Burke 10th senior,  Mark Fiddy 18th, Josh van Nierop failed to finish after crashing and spraining his wrist.
