FNSS Round 4

There was a good turnout of the yellow army on Friday for round 4 of the FNSS summer series at East Carlton Park. Our good friends and rivals Rockingham Wheelers hosted the event and were assisted with course design by local MTB guru Neil Holman. As ever it was a fun and challenging course where climbing ability and descending skill was more important than power – we’re convinced there’s a mountain hidden in the woods there. The fastest flowing section through the woods was great fun but, in spite of some lights being rigged up, we were riding largely on memory for the last couple of laps as the late August evening light started to fail in overcast conditions, bombing through the trees on a section where you could gain speed pump-track style getting air on the larger bumps. The climbs were more demanding though. Neil had found an even steeper trail than normal – fortunately short, but bottom gear and weight over the front wheel were required. This flowed round to a descent with a dead turn on damp grass which caught out the over-ambitious before the long ascent to the finish where you felt like you were breathing through your ears.
