Welland Valley Cycling Club, one of the East Midland’s biggest cycling clubs, has collaborated with vehicle services specialist Cox Automotive in a move that will see the club return to Bruntingthorpe Airfield and Proving Ground for a series of events aimed toward increasing participation in the sport across all ages and abilities.
Under the agreement, the airfield will host the club for bike racing, time trials, skills training for young riders, and ‘have-a-go sessions’ for beginners. The partnership sees local Leicestershire business Cox Automotive become official sponsors of Welland Valley CC’s 2021 Time Trial Leagues, run under the banner of the Cox Automotive League. Between May and September, the championship will see riders compete in time trials across five divisions.
Welland Valley CC chairman, Jon Durnin, said: “The partnership with Cox Automotive is great news for cycling. The club will be able to run four circuit races and four time trials at Bruntingthorpe this year, without any road traffic. This is a huge help in developing the confidence of people fairly new to cycling.
“We also plan to run training and skills sessions for youngsters in our Whizz Kids section, along with some taster events for Cox Automotive staff and their families, and for the wider local community.”
Chief Operating Officer at Cox Automotive, Peter Bell said: “As a major local employer we are keen to strengthen our links with communities across South Leicestershire, boosting access to safer ways to cycle and exercise for all.
“Our partnership with Welland Valley Cycling Club enables us to provide some great cycling opportunities to the local community, as well as our employees, in line with our focus on wellbeing and active lifestyles.”
