Updated: WVCC Kibworth 10 results 06/09/2020

Our only chance at WVCC’s fastest course in 2020 dawned less windy and sunnier than predicted, but still a coolish 13C. Thanks to all officials for genial sign-on, professional timekeeping, and (not least) to roundabout marshalls whose visibility and assertively clear signals certainly gave me a safe & completely seamless ride. Thanks too to the sadly unwell non-rider Gary Roberts & co whose enthusiastic bell-ringing sons spurred me on both out and back.

This was a landmark TT for me. My strategy for getting through lockdown was to start training with Matt Bottrill who has been inventive, responsive and encouraging. I finally invested in a fancy disk wheel (why are they so hard to pump up?), lost a few kilos, and steadily increased my training load which is now 3x what it was. But as a Leicester leper I couldn’t join WVCC TTs for the first month – Jon Durnin did his best to keep me on board!

When I did start racing the times were, frankly, not that different. So I was starting to wonder if this short season would end in disappointment. Today’s finishing time of 25m51, which took almost a minute off my previous PB, made me feel like I had died and gone to heaven. I still have a soppy grin on my face. It’s hard to describe to those who don’t do this why it matters quite that much, but thanks to all the clubmates who celebrated with me.
