Mike Vybiral reports on the recent Welland Wonders Audax.
A great day. Wonderful weather, a big turn out and lots of money raised for charity. It was the 14th Welland Wonders, three routes N, S and E of Husbands Bosworth, the longest being 160km. The signup was the biggest ever at 95 and probably 85 turned up on the day. Entrants were from far and wide, London, Shropshire, Derbyshire, Cambridge and included a good few from WVCC. It was chilly at the start but the day soon warmed and by midday it was hot. Comments from riders on their return were, as usual, ‘Didn’t realise how hilly it is around here!’. No accidents or incidents, all went well. The longest on the road were David & Norman who left at 8.00 and checked back in at 18.30. Besides the reward of a good day out, £800 was raised for BHF, SANDS, Air Ambulance and Whizz Kids. Thanks to contributors, that’s riders, helpers, controls and all. Special thanks to George Barnett for food, signs and a full day’s work. Also to Alison, new landlady at the Old Kings Head, Long Buckby. This was the first control, with 60+ bacon cobs, sweets, bisuits and juice, all FOC. If you’re in that neck of the woods, do call in and say thanks.
Well done Mike for organising a great event.
