Adrian ‘Killa’ Killworth set off at 3am in torrential rain this morning to get to Melbourne, near York for his 6.52 start in the Team Swift combined 12 hour, 100 mile and 50 TT. He had entered the 100 mile event.
Adrian says “Conditions were damp, overcast and windy in places, but fortunately the event was north of the rain. I had raced the course before three years ago, but roadworks forced a late change from 2.5 laps of a 40 mile circuit to nearly 4 laps of a 26 mile circuit, which I think suited me as it was easier to judge the effort and to psychologically break it down into sections.
I started on a 4:20 schedule, but with a real target of 4:30 as I was bound to slow. This worked well for the first two laps, but it started to get tough in the third lap as it became more difficult to hold my form and concentration as it started to hurt in various places. I played the countdown game – 67 miles – two thirds done – eat, drink. 75 miles only a 25 to do. Third lap complete – 22 to go – time for a gel. 85 done – nearly there – another gel, finish the drinks – the pain could be pushed aside now. Counting down a mile at a time to 90 – just a club 10 to go – no more worrying about speed or heat rate – just ride on feel”.
Adrian finished an impressive 4:27:51, a PB by nearly 9 minutes and 7th overall, and was very pleased with the time on a course that although reasonably flat is slow with grippy road surfaces.
Well done Adrian, time for a rest now!
