Registration is now open for your club’s showpiece event of the year – the 2019 Welland Valley Sportive in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support..
And club chairman, Jon Durnin, is calling on all WVCC members to support the event by signing up to take part, spreading the word to family and friends and/or volunteering to help run the event.
The date for your diary is Saturday, May 25. Race HQ is The Langton Brewery at Thorpe Langton – where a free beer (or soft drink) awaits all finishers. This year we’ve got two fabulous and challenging new road routes of 100km and 60km; along with two off-road rides of 60km and 30km; plus a 17km family ride.
In addition, there’s free car parking; refreshments available at sign-on (including those essential bacon rolls) and post-race; along with a live band to keep you entertained as you rest up in the sunshine.
All routes are fully signed; with a free food station, electronic timing and a ‘broom wagon’ to assist with mechanical problems or for anyone unable to complete the ride.
Jon said: “The Welland Valley Sportive is a chance for the club to put itself in the spotlight and I’d love to see as many members as possible getting involved.”
Entry for Welland Valley CC members is at the reduced price of £20 in advance (£10 for the family ride), which includes a free beer or soft drink at the finish (just in case you missed that bit), and can be made by visiting https://macmillanharborough.org.uk/, where you’ll also find all the GPS route maps. Now in its sixth year, the sportive raised £12,000 in 2018 to help fund Macmillan clinical nurse specialists in local communities.
And finally – as an added incentive – if you get some mates to join you on the ride (and they mention your name when signing up) you’ll go into a free draw for a bottle of Two Birds gin. Can’t say fairer than that; so get the word out to all your cycling mates via social media or even an ‘old-school’ phone call or face-to-face conversation.
The Welland Valley Sportive 2019 promises to be a great day out to remember.
