Cycling Skills Race Night
A big, big thank you to Mark and Jane Evans along with the coaches from Kettering CC for this summer season of cycling skills. We are delighted to learn that monthly skills sessions will continue alongside the ever amazing Whizz Kids exploits. With Mud Larks re-starting too, there’s plenty on offer!
There was beautiful sunny weather for our fun race night on Monday evening at Desborough, the final week of our joint skills sessions, a collaboration with Kettering CC Cyclones.
A long course was created around the green space, with a shortcut for the smaller ones, incorporating terrain and obstacles to test the skills developed during the sessions to date.
A great turnout of kids signed on and collected their race numbers before being shepherded around the course to ‘dial in’ with our special guest Amelia Cebak, the current Junior British Road Race Champion, herself an ex Cyclone, sporting her champs jersey!
The older riders set off first with four testing laps putting them through their paces, and some fantastic technique was clearly on display for the cheering crowd, some of whom had ridden in to watch. Following on were the younger riders who showed great spirit and determination during their two long laps in the still warm sunshine.
Trophy’s, medals and super prizes were handed to the podium places by our British Champion, but nobody went empty handed as they all deserved a medal for their efforts and commitment. Thanks to Neil at George Halls for providing a range of discounted goodies and to KCC for their contribution towards bike washing kits, gloves and bottles.
Now that Mudlarks has kicked in, with further Saturday offerings by Wizz Kids during the winter, the Desborough skills sessions will reduce to the first Monday evening of the month for intensive skills with feedback and some serious fun providing a complimentary package to the wide range of activities offered by Welland Valley Cycling Club. Kettering CC Cyclones will offer their own skills evening on the third Monday in the month at a site in Ise Lodge, Kettering.
Family days will also be on offer to bring the clubs kids together at locations tbc during the winter, to keep some new friendships going!
