We have a lovely report from Ruby Isaac following her weekend taking part in the Scarborough Road Championships
Last weekend I traveled to Scarborough road championships.
The weekend started on Saturday when I got the circuit around lunchtime and had a few sighting laps of the course
The course was really interesting as it has one really long climb and a long decent. At the bottom of the decent was a sharp left hand turn, so I did need to be a bit careful I didn’t go straight on. I think riding the course on the Saturday really helped me get ready for the race on Sunday, I had a bit of coaching on the Saturday and decided my plan for the race.
Now on to Sunday… firstly it was baking hot and I was warming up under an umbrella on my rollers… as what I thought was a bad omen I was number 13.
The start was quite different to most of my races as we had a neutralised start behind a car. As there was 31 under 14 girls in it I thought it would split apart quite early, especially with the big hill. The race was one lap of the top and then descend down the hill on lap 2. My plan was to stay as close to the car as possible and then try to lead the riders round on lap 1 and then try to be as close to the front as possible going down the hill so I could have a good look around and if it did split apart hopefully I would be towards the front.
And it split up straight away… then it got even more strung out up the hill… first time up the hill I felt really bad, and it was not good thinking about having to go up it another 6 times. I settled into a group of about 4 riders towards the middle of the pack and then managed start pulling away from them as the race went on, and eat time up the hill I was stronger and stronger. As the race went on I managed to work up to 10th and was really close to the girl in 9th. I ended up racing for 55 minutes and the last time down the hill I was going 64.1kph so it was quite quick.
So that was my best result of the year, by a long way, not it’s time to get my track bike out for the youth omnium series this weekend. Wish me luck!
