Following the prologue yesterday, team tandemlejog start their 12 day 1027 mile ride to John O’Groats this morning.

Club TT secretary Tim Smith and his wife Lucy Smith were due to embark on their LEJOG adventure in 2020 but 2 years of pandemic related issues have postponed the ride until today.

The ride was put in jeopardy in late March this year when Tim was hospitalised for over 3 weeks for urgent back surgery, meaning he would not be in a position to take on the challenge.

Thankfully the tandem element of the ride has been rescued by club results guru and endurance cyclist Mike Ives who only a handful of weeks ago took his first ride as pilot of the tandem. After 5 training rides together he will take the front seat on the bike all the way to the top of the country.

Former club captain Matt Plews will be riding alongside the pair the whole way, Tim who is now significantly improved will ride shorter distances everyday and provide some logistical support to the tandem pair, Matt will be riding carrying all his own kit.

Team tandemlejog is further swelled for today by former member Matt Crabtree when he joins them for today’s stage to Tintagel.

Club Chairman Jonathan Durnin is joining the ride for several days from Wednesday.

The ride is to raise money for the charity Thomas’s Fund, with an ambitious £10/mile £10,270 fundraising target. The charity provides music therapy to children and is named after Lucy and Tim’s son Thomas who died aged 10 in 2004 from a neurological condition.

You can follow the ride on fb- Friends of Thomas’s Fund.
