Phil Rayner placed a great 2nd in the 1st in the National Masters RR series.

Phil talks us through his race in detail below.

“This morning it was an early start to drive to Gt Barford near Bedford for the latest round of the national masters RR series. Straight from the gun the blue touch paper was lit and we were doing 30mph plus on the tailwind start. I soon realised that it would be very difficult to make a breakaway stick, as the first lap average was 26mph. I decided to follow and hide, gambling on a sprint finish.

Many breakaway attempts ensued, but the shear speed of the pack always brought the unsociable escapees back. The final break was caught with a kilometre to race, and with an uphill sprint I wanted to leave my sprint late. Guys were sprinting from 700m ,600m, dying then fresh guys coming thru for their attempt at glory.I waited. And waited, until my main adversary in the sprint, Karl Smith, (4hr drive home to Lancashire!!) launched a vicious gallop. I went as hard as I could up the drag, clicking into the 12 sprocket, pulled alongside … but not quite! A very close 2nd. So close, but no cigar.

Still first proper race of the year so fairly content.

Stats 58 miles in 2 hrs 16mins, average speed 25.6mph.

Will try again to get the arms aloft!”

Well done, Phil, thanks for the smashing report too.
