The Fabulous 5 #3: Off the water and on the bike in search of the perfect caramel slice!
Sarah Mee, Women’s Captain
I never really took to cycling as a kid, crying as soon as the stabilisers came off and only rarely getting back on a bike for the next 15 years (which probably explains my poor handling!). It was only once I stopped competing as a rower that friends persuaded me that cycling would be the ideal outlet for my dwindling fitness, and a reason to get out of London in an ongoing quest for the perfect caramel slice. I thought my days of competitive sport were long gone though, and aside from the odd sportive I lapsed into inactivity as work and life got in the way.
I joined WVCC when I moved to the area in 2016, drawn in by social rides organised by Claire Moore, but it wasn’t until the first lockdown that I started to get out on the bike more regularly. Gradually participating in more of the club activities, I quickly forgot my adamance that I was definitely never going to race and have been pleasantly surprised by how inclusive, non-intimidating – and more importantly, fun – these events are. I’ve been incredibly grateful for all of the advice, support and friendly competition at Welland Valley, not to mention the hard work that goes into organising the events. It’s also been hugely motivating to have a strong group of women to (attempt to) chase around the Bruntingthorpe circuit and the lanes of Leicestershire. This year I’m excited about giving more racing a go, hopefully some bikepacking in the summer and maybe even trying some off-road riding.
If anyone is thinking of trying any racing, or indeed anything else two-wheeled, for the first time I’d strongly encourage you to tap into the friendly experience on offer at the club. Also, please send me any cafe recommendations: the search for the perfect cake stop continues!
