Charlie Simpson writes about the long awaited 1st race in the Leicestershire Cyclocross League

After a long wait the Leicestershire Cyclocross League kicked off with Round 1 at Weldon Woodland Park, Corby and hosted by Rockingham Forest Wheelers.

Conditions were very un cross like with the sun beaming down and baking the already hard surface.
The course was a flat and fast parkland course with a couple of steep banks and tight switchbacks – it was fast n furious!

I compete in the Vets 50+ category and usually languish towards the rear and adopting the – it’s the taking part that counts – approach.

With the usual pre race apprehension and a quick practice half lap I knew it was going to be tough. ‘Its a roadies course’ called Denis Smith. Great I thought!

Gridding started and my name was called out in the 2nd row. I was next to the legend Vic Barnett and behind Simon Hale, ranked No 2 nationally in Vets 50+.

This would be the only time I would be in the top 10!!
Race started and it was fast from the off the riders passing me left and right and Vic leaving me for dust. I soon settled into the race with plenry of flat sections and a couple of steep off the bike climbs.

A lung busting leg sapping flat out 40 minutes. Hard work but great to be back on the cx bike!!
