On Sunday WVCC hosted the La Fleche Waltonne Road Races, organised by Road Race Secretary Phil Rayner as a road race test event for British Masters Cycle Racing. It is a national event, and had a full field.
Many thanks to ALL club members who gave up their mornings to help.
All riders went home with a smile on their faces, one of whom was Lawrence Cox:
When I received the start sheet from Phil and reading the list of class entrants, I knew I was in for a tough day. Leaving home at 8:40 to ride to the Bosworth HQ, the day was already getting steamy. Wearing just my race kit as Covid restrictions meant there were no changing facilities at HQ, I was quickly getting very warm and was hoping my 2 bottles would last the day.
At the Pavilion, a chat with Nik, Jamie, Rowland and Bunny helped settled the nerves before a short warm up with Adam prior to the rider briefing. It was getting hot so we tried to find a bit of shade before finally clipping in for the neutralised zone from Bosworth to Pincet Lane.
Once the flag dropped the pace immediately picked up. We hadn’t gone far when the scrape of carbon on tarmac signalled an early moment of panic as couple of riders came down. Fortunately, I heard they were OK but an early exit for them nevertheless.
For me from here it was just a case of conserving energy, making sure I was recovered and ready for the climb out of Walton. Each time with the hammer going down, up and over the top.
I managed to get a quick “how you doing?” with Adam Robinson who had been riding strongly up ahead as we passed the line with a couple of laps to go. He was looking good and clearly relishing the challenge.
Apart from a couple of moments after the Shearsby crossroads where complacency almost saw me out the back door, I was feeling OK and thinking I should try to move up for the last lap.
Those thoughts soon disappeared though, as the pace went up another notch as the bunch chased the group that hovered ahead. At the turn towards Walton, driven by the heat and lack competition, the first twinges of cramp kicked in. From there I just wanted to get to the finish as high up the bunch as possible.
As we raced down the country lane to the finish, the leaders were approaching the climb to the line to contest the spoils.
The last haul up to the finish really hurt as everyone dug in the get themselves over the line. I managed to steal a few places on the way up to finish the day happy in a dizzy 33rd place.
Thanks to Phil and the Welland Valley CC machine for putting on another great event and for the shouts of support. It really helped get me round.
Thanks for a cracking report Loz, well done all.
