Race report from Nat 25 comes courtesy of Matt Plews, thanks Matt.
On Sunday morning the cream of the UK time trialling scene were down to ride the Blue Ribbon event on the racing calendar, The National 25.
The biggest name on the startsheet was none other than Israel Startup Nation rider Alex Dowsett, fresh from a top 10 placing in the Worlds TT before heading to the Giro! He was joined by John Archibold, Dan Bigham, Chris Fennell and in the Womens event Joss Lowden, Emily Meakin and Alex Clay. They were joined by Welland Valley’s own dynamic time trialling duo, Linda Hubbard and Matt Plews.
They faced a rolling 25 miles out and back course along the A46 Six Hills, starting just outside the new Leicester City FC training complex. It was a cold morning made all the harder with a strong headwind on the outward leg. Linda received some words of encouragement from Phil who proclaimed that “he was glad that he wasn’t riding” and “it’s blowing a hoolie”, before she headed to the start, just the encouragement you need.
Linda rode a strong race to finish with 1:06:57, with Joss Lowden taking the Womens title with 52:14.
Matt started about an hour after Linda and there was no sign of the wind dropping or the temperature rising! Pushing hard into the headwind, he was just hoping that the tailwind return was to be as helpful as the headwind was brutal. Matt raced to a time of 57:33, with John Archibold recording a rapid time of 44:50, to take the win by nearly a minute.
Big thanks to my parents and Grandad, Robin Townsend and Ian and Claire Waterfield for the support and encouragement (and the loan of the spare set of wheels).
