Dom Switzer & Luke Jones competed in the HSBC UK National Cyclo Cross Championships at the weekend.
The course was a tough one with a mix of woodland, track, steps, thick muddy cambers and a mountainous bridge with steps up the one side, and a fast descent down the other side into some tight steep muddy cambers, so there was to be plenty of off bike running and carrying.
Luke was up first in the U14’s race and started hard and fast and went from 57th on the grid up to 22nd by the time he reached the first pit. He said he enjoyed the course but the bridge steps became harder to climb as the race went on. Unfortunately, due to a puncture on the last lap, he lost places but managed to pit, change bikes and raced through the finish line in a fantastic 36th place.
The U16’s race was next and Dom said he too enjoyed his race. Dom got off to a good start; he then struggled a bit in the mud, losing places but came back strongly to finish 55th.
They are both extremely grateful to the pit crew, Hans Van Nierop, Mike Deely & Phil Wilkinson who along with their Dads got them through their respective races.
