Phil, Martin and Bunny travelled to Flintham Notts for this annual road race event. Held over a fairly flat course with just the hill at the end of each lap to test weary legs. Phil and Martin’s Race was run over 45 miles at an average speed of 25mph. At times the field was in a long line as Martin showed his form only for Phil to burst through to pile on the agony, unfortunately a break managed to escape up the road leaving Phil and Martin to contest the uphill sprint for 5th place, both finished in the front of the bunch with Martin ( the elder) gaining 3rd in his age category and Phil no doubt wishing his own birthday would come so he could have taken the age prize, but as he said “I got my win last weekend”.
Bunny was racing against E group riders some of whom are 5 years younger as well as his own category. He chose the right break to chase and join halfway through the 38mile race and with a little cajoling the 6 worked well together until the penultimate time up the hill when Joey Williams and Bunny decided to flee the break. Malcolm Moore from Burbage managed to join them and the three of them sprinted to the chequered flag approximately 100metres ahead of their chasers. Bunny becoming a clear winner of the race and his age group.
The previous day Bunny was riding at Bodington Circuit in Leeds managing a fourth place and maintaining his lead in this the penultimate round of the over 65’s series. Who says youngsters have all the fun?
