Last weekend, club members made the long trip to Gatehouse of Fleet in the beautiful Galloway hills of southern Scotland for the Gralloch gravel race. The Gralloch is a major festival of cycling and one of the best off-road events in the country with 3000 riders competing in The Gralloch, The Gralloch Ultra and sportive.
Conditions were ideal on Saturday, cooler than the previous 2 years and the rain held off. The general consensus was that the forestry tracks felt a bit smoother, probably due to wetter conditions earlier in the season. As ever, the race was well organised under the watchful eye of race director (and club member) Rowland Summerlin.
James Moore, Dan McDonnell and Jason (Wilf) Williams all rode strongly in the 50-54 age group, finishing 8th, 21st and 47th out of 218 riders. James was competing for the win but suffered an untimely puncture.
Nik Kershaw finished 103rd out of 220 riders in the 55-59 age group and Kevin Mills finished 42nd out of 131 riders in the 60-64 age group.
James, Dan and Wilf all qualified for the UCI finals. Nik and Kevin will be trying even harder next year!
