National Cyclocross Series Round 1

Nik Kershaw reports:

It was the first round of the National Cyclocross series at the weekend at Moorways in Derby. Saturday consisted of the Vet and youth races, with the Sunday being the juniors, U23, and seniors. The middle of the week leading up to the event did not look good with rain forecast for both days, but as we got closer, the weather forecasts were starting to get better. The Saturday ended up being quite warm with quite a bit of blue skies for the day. With all the rain running up to the event, the course was quite dry with the lovely bombhole being rideable. Simon Askham was the only WVCC rider on Saturday, and he finished 31st in the Vet 40-49 event.
The Sunday was a bit overcast, and depending on what weather forecast you looked at, the rain was due at any point from 10 in the morning and then on and off through the day. Although the rain never appeared during the day, the course seemed to be a lot more slippery than the Saturday, with quite a few riders having wipeouts on corners. The first race of the day was the Junior Boys, which was an eye opener for Jamie Kershaw riding his first national event at Junior level with the high pace, and he battled through to 41st.
Next up was the junior girls, and again, for Ruby Issac, this was her first national event at Junior level and she ended up in 19th place.
The last race of the day was the senior/U23 race and making his debut at a National Cyclocross race was Tom Medley. After watching the weather forecasts all week, Tom had gone for a wet weather set up. Although the rain never showed up for him, he had a cracking race finishing in 49th place but 26th senior. He’s now talking about doing another national now.
Anyway, for myself, I was expecting a busy day in the pits with the rain we had forecast but all I ended up doing was was walking from one side of the pits to the other for Jamie, Ruby and Tom with their spare bikes.
Round 2 is in South Shields on the 26th-27th of October which I believe we are going to now as originally Jamie only wanted to do Derby with it being so close.
