Our thanks to Richard Latimer for this report from Sunday’s hill climb and congratulations to him too for his winning time. Once you’ve read the report, you won’t be surprised to learn that there are no photographs!
Sunday 22nd September was the date of the annual Interclub Hillclimb Championships between Welland Valley CC, Kettering CC and Rockingham CC. This year WVCC were the hosts and a smattering of showers was not going to stop the event.
“Is it on?” I asked a hardy WVCC volunteer on arriving at Medbourne Village Hall during a short gap between torrential downpours. “It’s always on” was the reply.
25 brave souls traversed the hill to Nevill Holt in what can best be described as extremely wet conditions, the pre-race chat dominated by talk of tyre pressures and swimming goggles. Ten of those were WVCC riders, with Richard Latimer taking the win and Will Cull, Jax Roberts and Gary Roberts all making the top 10. It was a good day for the youngsters with Aubrey Elmer and Rory Harrison putting in great performances in addition to Jax.
In the final reckoning the WVCC men reigned (sorry) victorious, narrowly retaining the Interclub trophy. The women’s prize this year went to Kettering CC courtesy of Maria Cayford, the sole female competitor; but the loudest plaudits should be reserved for the holders, timekeepers and marshals out on the course for they were exposed to the elements for far longer than the few minutes it took the racers to climb the hill!
