Welland Valley CC riders raced the Melton Olympic CC (Inc VTTA East Mids) 25 Mile TT on the A25/34 at Newark on Saturday
The riders were greeted with a warm afternoon and a light breeze, which provided a head/cross wind on the outer leg. With the layout of the road, the road is hidden behind grass embankments, which meant that the hopeful tailwind assistance return was not forthcoming.
Alex Smith and Adam Robinson both broke the ‘magical’ hour mark, and along with Matt Plews, they secured the overall team prize with a combined time of 2:54:52
Alex and Adam describe their experiences:
Alex Smith: “We set off for Newark looking forward to some quick racing. It was only my second TT on a time trial bike and with the kind help of Ian, I was given a disc and aero helmet to give me the marginal gains I knew I would need. Going into the TT, I was hoping to get under the hour mark and set that as my goal, however, despite the lovely weather, it was far from a quick day. I managed to pace it well and was comfortable on the bike which gave me a time of 59:02; winning the Junior category (I was the only one!) and finishing 31st overall while breaking the hour mark. It was a great day out and a thanks to Matt for the lift and for the cherry on top, while writing this, I’ve found out WVCC were the team competition winners, meaning I’m £15 richer than I was the day before!”.
Adam Robinson: “As we left Leicester in bright sunny, almost windless conditions to travel to Newark, spirits were high. As I was travelling with Simon Ward, he was giving me invaluable tips about the course.
My first time on that course and it felt good, always hard but good. Bingham hill was tough and also the turn back from the last island. I managed to achieve 59:26. But better than that , as Welland Valley CC, we won the team event on the day. I’m back there next month for more punishment and I can’t wait!”.
